Grand Rapids Travel Updates & Openings

All COVID Limitations Lifted June 22!

      Updated: 6/22/2021

The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) has issued a Recession of Emergency Orders lifting previous COVID-19 restrictions, including face mask requirements, social distancing guidelines and gathering limits.

Effective June 22, 2021, Grand Rapids is fully open and excited to welcome you back to experience all our region has to offer.

While the state has rescinded all of its business restrictions, individual providers are empowered to set their own guidelines for customers and employees. Please check individual websites to confirm any requirements before you visit. Rest assured that the enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols implemented during the pandemic continue to be the norm.

We thank all the residents and visitors who helped support our local tourism and hospitality industries over the past 15+ months – and we look forward to welcoming you back for more Grand Times!

      Airport

The Gerald R. Ford International Airport continues to require face masks inside its facility as required by federal law. The airport has been at the forefront of COVID-19 safety from the beginning of the pandemic. It is the first airport in Michigan to earn the Global Biorisk Advisory Council™ STAR® Facility Accreditation status from the ISSA -- the worldwide cleaning industry association.

In addition to being the "gold standard" for cleaning and sanitation, the airport introduced a Fly Safe. Fly Ford. campaign in 2020 to educate travelers on new precautions for their health and restore confidence in air travel. New safety features at the airport include continuous cleaning protocols, hand sanitizer stations, plexiglass dividers at interaction points, visual cues to reinforce physical distancing, and PPE available in concession areas and through vending machines. Passengers, guests and airport personnel are asked to wear facial coverings throughout the terminal.

The Ford airport also offers COVID-19 testing in the Economy Lot, in partnership with TACKL Health. No appointments are needed and drive-up testing options include: Rapid Molecular PCR tests (results in 30 minutes), Standard Molecular PCR Tests (results in 24-72 hours) and Rapid antigen and antibody tests (results in 15 minutes). The site is open from 4am-8pm every day.

Visit the TACKL Health website for more information. Explore more airport safety measures and travel tips.

      Dining & Drinking

Restaurants, breweries, distilleries, cideries, coffeehouses and other food & drink establishments can now operate without restrictions. Some are still working through pandemic-related staffing issues, so please be patient as they ramp up their service. Many establishments continue to offer the robust outdoor dining and carryout/delivery options they developed during the pandemic.

      Attractions

With the June 25 opening of the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, all major attractions are open EXCEPT the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, which has not yet announced a reopening date. Performing arts companies and live-music venues are presenting shows indoors and out. Some attractions continue to implement safety measures such as face masks, advance ticket purchase and contactless entry. Please check their websites in advance of your visit.

      Remaining Restrictions

MDHHS orders remain in effect for nursing homes, prisons, hospital, school, agricultural workers and other sectors that do not generally impact visitors.

The health and safety of visitors and residents remains a paramount concern. We continue to track state and federal COVID-19 updates and consult with businesses to keep them informed.
